En Avant Playwrights

company history

In case you’re just joining us, here’s what it all means: Tennessee Williams used to write En Avant! ("Forward!") in his diary to keep him motivated for the next day's writing.

En Avant is what we tell ourselves, those of us who believe there’s a life in the theater, audiences for imaginative, truthful work, brought to life by talented actors and directors.

Since its founding by several emerging professional playwrights who studied with Tina Howe at Hunter College, En Avant has grown to encompass eight playwrights (including Tina Howe!); has presented three evenings of new work at the Frederick Loewe Theater, and provided a producing arm for new work presented in other New York venues.

In addition, En Avant sponsors and maintains a bulletin board of opportunities for playwrights to submit their work which is open to all playwrights.

With the continued support of the Graduate Theater Department and Graduate Theater Club of Hunter College, the En Avant Playwrights are joined by a burgeoning company of professional actors, and a technical and creative team that showcases diverse, challenging and high quality work.
